To see an external flash disk of 8GB of disk space is natural in our days, even 80 GB may be believable if the price is more than 100$, but to see a flash disk of 1 Terra Byte at 40 USD that will be unbelievable.
Last weekend I was watching a football game with a friend, when he showed me his new Flash Disk of 800 GB of disk space. At first, I thought that there’s something wrong or it may be a lie of a Chinese product.
First thing I did in the Monday morning was to Google the availability of such technology, it was nice to know about the new file system the Extended file allocation table – exFAT which is a better adapted to the growing needs of mobile personal storage. The exFAT file system not only handles large files, such as those used for media storage, it enables seamless interoperability between desktop PCs and devices such as portable media devices so that files can easily be copied between desktop and device. In addition, exFAT can be adopted with minimal effort.
The exFAT has been introduced by Microsoft in the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and the Windows 7, and in their server operating system Windows Server 2008.
The exFAT system offers the following advantages:
- Enables the file system to handle growing capacities in media, increasing capacity to 32 GB and larger.
- Handles more than 1000 files in a single directory.
- Speeds up storage allocation processes.
- Removes the previous file size limit of 4 GB.
- Supports interoperability with future desktop OSs.
- Provides an extensible format, including OEM-definable parameters to customize the file system for specific device characteristics.
Thanks for Microsoft for this revolution in media storage, and now I going to find a device for me.
